Pre-surgery Rehearsal

This process is designed to help prepare a person for surgery through the use of guided imagery.

In use for over twenty years, this method of pre-surgery rehearsal has been shown in studies to decrease post-surgical complications by 80%.

The rehearsal is done daily for one to two weeks prior to the scheduled surgery.  The repetitive nature of the process allows the person to visualize a successful surgical outcome, thereby preparing the brain and body to work in harmony during the actual event. He or she imagines:

By the time the actual surgery takes place, the mind and body have already “been through” the surgery several dozen times, much like an Olympic skier who trains for competition by visualizing the perfect downhill ski run.  In the case of an Olympic athlete, the visualization takes place thousands of times in the course of years of training.

The pre-surgery rehearsal can be customized to suit each person’s needs. Patients are encouraged to discuss the details of the upcoming surgery with their doctor, so they can successfully visualize the actual operation taking place.  It is also recommended that patients encourage their doctors to speak positively to them during the surgery, as it has been shown that surgical patients under anesthesia can hear and sometimes remember what is said in the operating room.
