Pre-surgery Rehearsal (p.2)

Visualize the surgery just as your doctor has explained it to you.  In as much detail as you feel comfortable with, allow yourself to watch each step of the surgery, from beginning to end (long pause – at least 30 to 45 seconds)

As you watch the surgery, hear your doctor stating out loud how well the surgery is proceeding.

Once the operation is complete, and the surgical wound is closed, visualize yourself being wheeled out of the operating room and into the recovery room.

Feel and see yourself resting comfortably.

You know the surgery has been successful and you can relax.

Image yourself waking up.  Nurses are taking care of your needs, and after several hours you are wheeled to your room.

At this point your family may be waiting for you, and you can see their smiling faces as they greet you.

That night you rest comfortably and easily, and the next morning your doctor arrives to tell you that the surgery was successful and you will have a complete recovery.

See yourself getting stronger and healthier each day after the surgery.

And, finally, see yourself going home and living a healthy and full life, surrounded by people you love and who love you.

(If appropriate, you may also visualize any physical therapy or rehabilitation during the weeks and months after your surgery.)

On the count of ten, you may slowly open your eyes:  one – two – three – four – five – six – seven – eight – nine – ten.  Take as long as you need to get used to having your eyes open.  When you feel ready, have a sip of water and slowly get up.
